I read A LOT. And before I buy a book, I look through the reviews. This book had far more very good reviews than bad. So I bought it and read it. And after reading the book, I have no idea why it had so many "excellent" reviews. The writing is extremely simplistic. One other reviewer described it as monotone. I have to agree. I felt like the whole book was an outline of what could have been a very interesting fantasy novel. I usually devour a book in about 4 hours. This book took me 5 days to slog through. The only multi-dimensional character is the main character. The rest are simply sketches. The dialog does not flow and is very clunky. Much more time should have been spent on her training and interactions with other students and teachers. More description should have been used to flesh out her relationship with her familiars. Her familiars are called 'my darlings' but I had no sense of deep affection. There was no description of her communication with the animals other than statements that she directed them to do something and she could see and hear through their eyes and ears. The love interest is extremely flat. She fell in love with him in what? 5 days? Maybe? There's no description of his character other than he is a womanizer and handsome. I soon got bored with the plot: they went to this town and the gypsies put on a show and she killed some people, then they went to another town and they put on a show and she killed some people, then they went to another town and the exact same things happened... As far as the actions scenes went, they were ok. I felt like the whole intuition vs logic thing got old quickly. Also, her besting her enemies seemed pretty simplistic. There were really no elaborate plots or escapes or fights. Her enemies were extremely stupid; I didn't feel that her intelligence was THAT intelligent. As far as her readings of people, I felt that a lot more description should have gone into that. They way the readings are described it's like her tellings just come from nowhere. What were the subtle clues she was seeing that her tellings were crafted from? I understand why she could figure out if a customer was an assassin or not, but the other parts of her tellings seemed to come out of left field. Lastly, the ending of the book was a complete let-down. It was wrapped up way too quickly and easily.
If you're looking for a book to simply pass time, then buy it. But if you're looking for a book to really get into, I would not recommend this.

The Shadow Ryana The Shadow Sisters Book 1 eBook C R Daems Reviews
An alternate reality story with a kick-ass heroin. Starts with Ryanna as a helpless, unwanted child, who is taken in by the Shadow Sisters and educated and trained to be a spy and assassin, serving the Sisterhood in maintaining the status quo in society. She has to find her own familiar/s and develop her skills. She is eventually on a mission to find out what causing the loss of Sisters out in the real world. This is a slow moving phantasy with magic, "special skills" and combat. It is probably an older teenage book. Non-explicit violence and sex.
I liked the story and the characters. It was wonderful fiction. It started with a young girl starving, feeling useless, unwanted and unloved because she has been taught she had no value. The Shadow Sister had no self esteem but she is afraid to die especially from physical hunger simply because she is female and deemed unnecessary. Shortly after being verbally chastised by her father for having eaten some meager amount of food, she is afraid she will be whipped or killed simply because she is a worthless female. Instead her father is shamed by a woman known as a Shadow. She purchases the girl for a pittance. Although her lot in life improves tremendously when she is taken in by the Shadows she doesn't understand and all she knows for a long time is, she must do her best and be the best or return to her previous uncertain life of poverty. She learns the shadow purposes and wants to remain and works even harder to remain with them. She learns that there are 2 permanent roles of a shadow. One which involve killing. She does not want to be an assassin but she does want to be the best despite her self doubt. She works hard and masters several skills but not all.
At the end of her training she takes a test that allows her not only to remain in the Shadow sister hood but she also becomes both an apprentice spy, her goal, and an apprentice assassin as well. In addiction the Senior Shadow Sister who supervises the school also gives her the marks that make her both senior Spy and Assassin. She is confused. She is the best student they've had in a long time and there are Shadow sisters who being killed. She is given the task of finding out who is killing them and why and bringing that information back to the Senior Shadow Sisterhood Supervisor. What she is asked to do may cause her death and though she simply wants to live a helpful and modest life, she believes in the sisterhood and will give her all to assist those she believe to be her family.
This modest but untraditional young woman faces many challenges on her journey that would scare off many of her sisters. She will do all she can to save the sisters and the many colorful and interesting people characters along the way. She will kill if she must and forge new alliances while growing and learning much about herself and life along the way. She is vulnerable, but strong. She learns her weaknesses and enlists the aid of others by promising not to hurt them and/or to come to their aid when needed.
This is a terrific book and I literally couldn't but down as I wanted to find out how much more she would have to do and how much pain she would have to endure. She sacrificed much for those she loved and I wanted her to be well loved for the wonderful person she always was and the phenomenal woman she became.
An intriguing tale of a young woman who, despite her limited background manages to succeed in unpredictable ways in her training as a Shadow Sister, only to find herself faced with an impossible mission.
Overall, The Shadow Ryana lives up to the excellent narrative quality those who are familiar with C.R. Daems's work have come to expect. As with every single book ever written, there are typographical errors and confusing tense changes, but that's just my nature to pick on. They do not detract from a compelling story of a young woman with a difficult task that eventually causes her to question her loyalties and whether her actions will leave her with a home when her mission is complete.
It's unpredictable, creative, and engrossing. The ONLY disappointment I had with the book came in the resolution of one of the lingering loose ends very late in the book. I felt it to be too trite and unnecessary and somewhat demeaning of the protagonist. However, with a sequel on the nearing horizon, perhaps my misgivings will prove to be unwarranted.
